The Era New Horizons International Film Festival breaks the boundaries of mainstream cinema with its experimental film screenings, competitions and premieres. The works are showcased at cinemas and theatres across Wroclaw.
The festival's competitions are a great platform for experimental filmmakers - both Polish and foreign - to get their works noticed. For the Era New Horizons International Competition, 14 films are pre-selected from hundreds of works and the overall Grand Prix award is selected by a panel of judges. There's a separate award for the audience's favourite film.
There is also a New Polish Film Competition, featuring debut film-features and documentaries from Poland's newest talent, a Films About Art Competition and The Polish Short Film Competition.
Contests aside, the festival organises different screening cycles, some of which are dedicated to particular countries and directors. In 2009, some of the chosen themes include Canadian cinema, New Swedish cinema and director Tsai Ming-liang.
