For most of the year, the tiny windswept island of Tinos is so sleepy that most of the locals forget what day of the week it is. But everything changes around Easter. Hundreds of devout Greeks (many from nearby Athens) descend upon the island to celebrate the resurrection at Greece's most holy Orthodox church - the Megolohari.

This olive tree is 1000 years oldMost of the chaos centres around the services at the church, but every restaurant, coffee shop and home throws open their doors for a full week of celebrations. Families congregate to fill up on festive sticky foods and plenty of powerful ouzo. If you're lucky enough to find somewhere to stay (accommodation goes very quickly - although camping is always a possibility) you are bound to find yourself in someone's front room imbibing too.

Expect a lot of noise, invariably on the tops of cars with loud blowing things. Somehow this strange ritual has crept into the Easter festivities, making the evenings just as loud as the day. It's worth a day trip at the least, and you never know, you may even see a statue weep...
