On Remembrance Day, anniversary of the First World War Armistice (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month), Australia remembers those who fought in the World Wars. A solemn ceremony takes place at Canberra's Australian War Memorial.

Poppy, symbol of remembrance. Photo by Annie Mills, © WhatsonwhenThe laying of poppy wreaths by Australia's Prime Minister and the Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia is an integral part of the ceremony. A single rose is also laid on the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, while the sounding of the Last Post is followed by the traditional one minute's silence.
