Best for families: The Cumberland

The lowdown… This musical-themed hotel has everything you need for a family holiday that truly rocks. The rooms blend simplicity and style, featuring fun decor like mirrors marking the height of pop stars. Gold Family rooms can sleep up to four guests and feature amenities like fast Wi-Fi and a TV (which is useful when the kids – and the adults – need a little downtime). You can even borrow a Fender guitar during your stay. Just visit the concierge desk to arrange a visit to the ‘Fender room’ and choose your guitar – or, as some poetic musicians might say, let it choose you.

When you’re not jamming at the hotel, get some fresh air on a walk around Hyde Park and take the children out on a pedalo or rowing boat. Hop on the underground to Leicester Square, where you’ll find the Lego shop and M&M’s store. Come evening, catch a musical in the West End and return to your hotel to form your own band, re-enacting the songs from your favourite show.

Best for luxury: Raffles London at The OWO

The lowdown… You’ll be blown away by the grandeur of Raffles London in the Old War Office building in Whitehall. The likes of Sir Winston Churchill and James Bond creator Ian Fleming once walked through the halls of this Grade II Edwardian Baroque building – you might even recognise the setting from some 007 films. Now you’ll find luxury-seekers and glamorous holidaymakers gliding through the gorgeous lobby. Experience fine dining and pampering aplenty, and make yourself at home in an elegant room complete with a marble bathroom and walk-in shower.

Stroll through nearby St James’s Park or Covent Garden, or admire close landmarks like Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, before unwinding in the hotel’s spa. Plunge into a pool, sit back in a sauna or book an indulgent treatment. Once you’re feeling suitably serene, pull up a chair in one of the nine restaurants or three bars on site. Sample gorgeous seasonal produce as you dine on dishes inspired by English gardens at chef Mauro Colagreco’s signature restaurant.

The spa at Raffles London spans four floors. On the ground floor you’ll find the atelier selling Guerlain products. Stock up on luxurious fragrances and, if you feel like spoiling yourself even further, ask for an express beauty treatment.

The location, right by Kensington High Street underground station, is fabulous and the amenities are fantastic. Holiday Inn London Kensington even boasts a big indoor pool, which is a rarity for a budget London hotel. There’s also a spa and a gym.

Best for business travellers: Native Bankside

The lowdown... Native Bankside’s apartment-style rooms boast everything you need for a comfortable stay during your business trip. After a long day of meetings, return to your room and sink into a comfy bed before popping on the TV. Then whip up something to eat in the kitchenette, featuring a kettle, sink and hob. Need to prepare for morning presentations? There’s space to work in your room – or you can set up shop in the communal workspace.

Native Bankside is based in a former Victorian tea warehouse, so you can expect plenty of trendy arched windows and exposed brick walls throughout the hotel.
