Fascinating history and ancient treasures

Like all the Greek islands, there is ancient culture everywhere you look on Santorini. The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is a great place to start. It exhibits artefacts found at the nearby Akrotiri, dating back to the Neolithic period, 5000 years ago. Akrotiri itself, a few kilometres away, is an open archaeological dig of this ancient civilisation’s past. The Minoan culture was destroyed by the eruption of 1650 BCE. The city was fully preserved by volcanic ash – much like Pompeii.
