There is so much going on in the Algarve

When you think of the Algarve, the spectacular beaches are the first thing to spring to mind. But there are plenty of other things to do and see in Portugal’s southernmost region – see what takes your fancy.

Go to Slives and admire the 13th century castle, a monument to the Moorish occupation of Portugal and Spain. Visit the wonderful town of Tavira, which gives you a glimpse of life prior to the tourism boom and sample delicious grilled sardines. Go to the Lagos Zoo, or take a boat trip around the Ria Formosa and explore the lagoons. Of course, you could try golf at one of the many world-renowned clubs. Or if you are feeling adventurous – give surfing a go in Sagres.

Beaches.

Beaches

With almost 250 kilometres of coastline, beaches in the Algarve are difficult to choose between – from craggy cliffs to golden-sanded havens. Take a trip to the Praia de Albandeira near Carvoeiro for an insight into the undiscovered Algarve. Or go for one of the many blue-flag beaches, such as the Praia do Martinhal which attracts a big surf crowd.

Museums/sightseeing

Museums & sightseeing

Visit ancient historical sites, like the Roman Cero de Vila in Vilamoura for a glimpse into the past of this diverse region. The awe-inspiring cliffs at Sagres Point will leave you wanting to explore the Atlantic Ocean, much like the navigators of the Age of Discovery. Or hop into the near-past on a trip to Tavira, to see pre-tourism life.

Food

Food & wine

The range of dining is certain to satisfy every taste bud – from sophisticated Portuguese tapas to rough-and-ready beachfront dining. Fish and seafood are a huge part of life in the Algarve as it has over 220km of coastline. Grilled sardines are a favourite in Lagos, served with quaffable red wine from the local vineyards. Wineries are popping up all over the Algarve, especially around Portimão.

Golf.

Golf

With world-renowned courses dotting the Algarve, it is easy to see why this is major pastime. Some of the top resorts have championship-level setups, and will ask for handicap certificates. So be sure to bring your best game. Vilamoura is high on the list of every golf enthusiast, for its perfect weather and lush rolling grasslands. Also, check out Almancil for great seaside courses.

Surfing and watersports.

Surfing and watersports

Whilst the Algarve might not be as well known for surfing as the west coast, there are still some amazing surf breaks to be found here. Sagres sits on the south-west coast and gets some big waves over autumn and the winter months. But for beginners, head over toward Lagos and Portimão for smaller waves or to try kite-surfing.
