Driving itineraries we recommend from San Diego

Explore the stunning southern Californian coast and more from San Diego

South California beaches.

The coastal road to Los Angeles is dotted with a string of coastal gems, starting with the aptly-named ‘jewel’ of San Diego, La Jolla. The meandering coastal road takes you past some of the best beaches in California, if not the world. Follow the path north toward Malibu, a sunshine paradise made famous by many Hollywood films. On the way, stop off to marvel at coastal trails, go rock-pooling with the kids, or hit the surf of the magnificent Pacific Ocean. A truly spectacular trip.

Palm Springs.

With the unbelievable San Jacinto Mountains as a backdrop, Palm Springs is one of the most beautiful towns in California. The city is a cultural hotspot, with arts, theatre, dance and entertainment high up on its agenda. Wander its palm-lined streets to browse in high-end boutiques, galleries and museums. The famous Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a sight to behold as it whisks you up to the summit of Mount Jacinto offering incredible views of the surrounding forest.

Joshua Tree National Park.

A holiday in San Diego would be incomplete without a trip to the impressive Joshua Tree National Park. Drive through the sparse desert, before spotting the distinctive spiny trees that give this region its name. The rugged and inhospitable landscape of this vast park is like being on another planet, with tendril-like Joshua trees protruding the sand. Look out for snakes and lizards as you explore the rocky bluffs and ancient ground. Discover the park’s fascinating gold mining past and cultural heritage at the brilliant museum.

Driving in Tijuana.

Being so close to Mexico’s border, it would be an oversight not to venture nearby Tijuana. The largest city in Baja California, there is plenty to see and do in the ‘Gateway to Mexico’. It has a famous art community, surrealistic architecture, and a spellbinding local history. The stalls and shops on Revolution Avenue are great for haggling or finding a bargain. There is also a great music and dance scene. Head to La Sexta, a hub of bars and clubs – perfect for a wild night out.

Driving in Cleveland.

A wonderful National Forest just to the east of San Diego. If you have ever wanted to be in a cowboy film, then a road trip to this humble but breathtaking park is a must. Offering visitors a variety of terrains, such as lush forest and grassy plains, the region takes you back to a time-less-hurried. Relax at a picnic spot, hike across its rocky bluffs or try trekking the land on horseback. Don’t miss the Sunrise Scenic Highway on the way back into town.
