This beautiful region of Costa Blanca has long been favoured for its stunning beaches and exuberant nightlife. Dig a little deeper and you’ll soon discover its traditional Spanish roots too, permeating out through the narrow lanes of Alicante and its neighbouring towns.
Discover the lesser-known areas boasting an authentic Spanish feel. You won’t find any high-rise buildings in Javea, instead expect to see ancient narrow streets and traditional whitewashed houses. And you’re just as likely to dine on Spanish tapas and paella as English favourites like fish and chips. While Denia boasts a cosmopolitan port, large marina and palm-fringed main street dotted with cafes and designers shops. Beyond the beaches, there are fascinating cities to be explored. Take in the spectacular views from Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante or explore the rice fields and orange groves that surround Valencia.
Alicante is a small Spanish city with lots to offer, from golden sandy beaches to an array of dining and nightlife options and unique monuments, museums and parks. Visit the Santa Barbara castle, with its great views across the city, or the famous promenade La Explanada de Espana. Shop until you drop at the Panoramis Complex and explore the narrow lanes of El Barrio, which are filled with a variety of bars. Head to Esplanada, where you can party until late.
You’ll either love or hate Benidorm’s bold personality. It combines vibrant bars, restaurants and clubs with a charming old town area and the magnificent mountainous backdrop of Sierra Hilda. Benidorm is a very popular tourist hotspot, located on the Costa Blanca. Its dominant skyline is sometimes called the ‘Manhattan of Spain’, due to the multitude of high-rise tower blocks. This well-known resort represents great value for money and appeals to a wide range of people.
La Manga is a coastal resort situated next to the Mar Menor, Europe’s largest saltwater lake. Located on the southernmost tip of the Costa Blanca, it offers an abundance of golf courses including the famous La Manga Golf Course. Costa Callide is renowned for its hot summer weather and mild winter climate, making it an appealing choice for year-round breaks. A great place for families, children will love the calm lagoon with its shallow waters and wide range of water sports.
Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and the true home of Paella, where the dish originated. It’s the ideal city break location, where you can enjoy culture, good shops, great restaurants, nightlife and beaches. Shop in the famous El Corte Ingles department store, or browse the shops of La Calle Colon, where you’ll find well-known brands like Mango and Zara. Stroll around La Plaza de Alfonso el Magnánimo and stop at the official Valencia Club de Fútbol shop to pick up VCF souvenirs.
These smaller, family-friendly resorts boast plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. Denia is situated north of Java and has an authentic Spanish feel. Its Blue Flag beaches are great for water sports, while the brightly coloured restaurants and bars give you plenty of choice. Javea is a gem of a town, situated south of Denia. Its rugged coastline is indented with secluded coves and sandy beaches. And the charming Old Town exudes culture with its Gothic church, ancient narrow streets and whitewashed houses.
