Getting around Lagos

Getting around Lagos

Lagos airport is located 14 miles northwest of the city centre. During peak hours the drive takes just over an hour. Taxis are the safest and most efficient way to travel to and from the airport – look out for official taxis Metro and Red Cab – although if your budget allows it, consider hiring a car and a driver, usually available through the big hotels. Lagos is known for its traffic jams but the recent Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) schemes are going some way in alleviating the congestion. Inexpensive and convenient, these buses are a good way to move between the mainland and the islands.

With an ever-increasing number of visitors every year, Lagos airport can get extremely crowded, so go early and expect long queues. There’s a very good newsagent, as well as three well stocked duty free shops selling alcohol and beauty products. A number of food vendors offer anything from chicken to, well, more chicken. There are several banks, and free internet is available at the airport’s three executive and VIP lounges – it’s worth paying the $20 fee to gain access to one of them.
