The 3 Valleys – the largest ski area in the world – is a great area for beginners because it has six superb resorts to choose from. Meribel, also known for its laid-back atmosphere and après ski scene, has plenty of sloping green and blue runs. The resort of Courchevel has ideal conditions for beginners, with world-renowned ski schools (like ESF) and well-placed rest stops on the mountain. Or try La Tania, in between the two for easy access to green pistes and quieter slopes – perfect for those new to skiing and snowboarding.
Outside of the 3 Valleys, the great resorts of Les Arcs (five different areas) are part of the Paradiski system. You will find the mountains bursting with blues and reds, with the chance to do some more difficult black runs too. In fact, over 50% of the pistes are ideal for intermediate or advanced skiers. The Espace Killy, where you can find superb Val d’Isere and Tigne is perfect with plenty of pistes for intermediates, and also some fairly easy jumps for those looking to test their skills.
Between the two huge areas of 3 Valleys and Paradiski, there is some fantastic advanced skiing – with plenty of black runs and off-piste to test your mettle. Val Thorens in the 3 Valleys is well-known for great off piste and difficult moguls, as well as being the highest resort in Europe. Val d’Isere and Tignes, because of their fruitful history with snowboarding have some of the best snowparks in France – with halfpipes and jib (rails) sections in the parks. You will also find great black runs and off-piste.
Chambery is near to some superb child-friendly resorts – Meribel, Courchevel and Les Menuires in the 3 Valleys have all got great kids clubs. If you venture over to Tignes, they have a few clubs and creches available for kids who can already ski, and ski schools for those who can’t. Adults can then go off on their own or head to the spa. Les Arcs 1600 is ideal for families because it is uncrowded and car-free, with easy greens for the kids and blue runs for the adults.
Depending on where you are staying, the area around Chambery has some of the best après ski in Europe. Courchevel, Meribel-Motteret and Val Thorens have laid-back bars and restaurants, with Meribel catering to a younger crowd, especially in the centre of town. Tignes has brilliant bars offering cheap(ish) beers and a lot of dancing on the tables – or quieter options for the more reserved crowd. Les Arcs 1800 has some great pubs, and with piste to door skiing you can’t lose. Just be sure to drink responsibly.
