Explore the Balearic island of Ibiza

It's known as Europe’s capital of hedonism, but there’s more to the island of Ibiza than just clubbing. Ibiza also retains many reminders of its long history, some of which have earned the island a UNESCO heritage listing.

Undoubtedly, the bars and clubs of Ibiza Town – and recently Playa d’en Bossa – have attracted partygoers for decades. Much of Ibiza, however, is still lush forest – discreet and rugged. Northern beaches, such as the secluded coves in San Juan, still possess the attractive qualities that brought hippies flocking to the island in the 1960s. Quiet spots provide escapism in the busy summer months, with the former quarry of Atlantis and the hidden beaches near Cala d'Hort offering a slower pace. Old Ibiza hands come for the island’s warm spring and autumn, where beaches, bars and restaurants are quieter and you’re more likely to be rubbing shoulders with the locals rather than celebrities.

Ibiza areas

A quick guide on where to go on the island

Ibiza Town.

You can find everything you need in Ibiza Town, the island's largest city. A ten minute stroll from the beach, Vila d’Eivissa (as it’s known in Catalan), has a bustling harbour decked with super yachts. Fantastic daily-caught seafood can be bought in the many cafes and bars. The streets come alive at night, with tree-filled plazas bustling with the evening crowd ready for the fiesta. You’ll also find world-famous club Pacha in Ibiza Town.

 San Antonio.

Perfect for the budget conscious, this huge stretch of beach and bars is famous for its sunset DJ sets at Café Del Mar, its party atmosphere and many nightclubs. Yet with a lot of water sports on offer, including the new Ocean Mania inflatable water park, San Antonio offers something for everyone. However, if you are looking for a quieter, more relaxed time, then the Hotel Gran Sol is a cut above the rest.

Playaden.

The hip area of Ibiza, Playa d’en Bossa is the place to see and be seen. It has the best clubs, bars and hotels – like the stylish and exclusive Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel – where the more affluent partygoer can dance the night away. High on the list to visit is the new Hard Rock Hotel, where live music acts play to huge crowds throughout the season. It has one of the longest beaches on Ibiza, with parasols and sunbeds to while away the day.

Portinatx, at the north of the island, is popular with families escaping the crowds of the bigger cities. You will find breathtaking scenery, beautiful beaches and hotels with great pools, like the Marconfort El Greco. The area is perfect for snorkelling, with crystal clear waters, hidden coves and welcoming golden beaches. You will find some great nightlife here too, but with a leisurely, relaxed mood.
