California is well known for its fantastic weather, love of exercise, and all things outdoors. San Jose is no exception, with an average of 300 days of sunny weather a year and lots of green spaces, you will find something perfect for you. Hire a bike and take to one of the many trails across the city or play golf on a championship-level course. Take a trip to the Monterey Bay for kayaking and sailing, or try surfing in Santa Cruz – birthplace of surfing on the US mainland – home to some of the best surf breaks in the world.
San Jose is perfectly placed to act as a gateway to the beautiful Californian coastal landscape. Go on a road trip to the Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s oldest state park or head to Mount Diablo – which is considered sacred by some Native Americans as the point of creation. Head to the surf-friendly Santa Cruz, where you’ll find a great example of a classic seaside amusement park at the Beach Boardwalk. Or venture further south to Monterey Bay, whose stunning coastline road should end in a visit to Monterey’s world-famous aquarium.
San Jose has some of California’s leading museums – from ancient artefacts to ultra-modern ideas, there is something to see. Go for a day to the Children’s Discovery Museum, where kids can pull, poke and prod exhibitions to learn how things work. Or maybe a trip to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, whose 4000-plus exhibits make it an authority on Ancient Egyptian culture on the west coast. Don’t miss The Tech Museum of Innovation, which showcases new technology and ideas – including a place to build your own robots.
San Jose may be a business heavy destination, but there is still plenty do in the evening. From dive bars and swanky cocktail haunts to live music venues and gourmet dining. Make sure you go Downtown to San Pedro Square Market, a fun and lively food hall open late at night, where you can try pizza, tacos, burgers and more all under one roof. After that head to Blank Club to check out some live music, it is a dive bar but is considered the best for alternative music – they even do some karaoke on quieter evenings.
Just north of San Jose and San Francisco is wine country – Napa Valley and Sonoma are amongst the most famous. But there are vineyards all over northern California, from low-key wineries in urban warehouses to tasting rooms adjacent to picturesque vineyards bursting with fruit. Visit one of the 70 or so boutique, family-owned wineries in the Santa Cruz area, where an intimate, personal wine tasting experience can be found. So bring a picnic, buy a bottle and sit gazing at the stunning scenery of Silicon Valley to the east.
