Less than an hour from the Gulf of Mexico’s shore, Houston is the gateway to the Texan coast. This region is easy to explore with a Houston fly-drive holiday, and you can be at Galveston’s Schlitterbahn Water Park or on the quieter beach at Surfside within hours of touching down at Houston airport. For an urban contrast with Houston, the Texan state capital of Austin is two and a half hours drive away, a hip, laid-back city known for hosting the alternative-leaning springtime SXSW music festival. Just beyond Austin are the Texas Hill Country’s wide-open landscape of forested hills and the city of San Antonio, still a pilgrimage site for many Texans as the site of the Battle of the Alamo.
Drive from one major Texas city to another, taking in rural Texas on route. Potential stops include Centerville, with its colonial courthouse and Fort Boggy state park, or Huntsville, where the grave of Sam Houston is located, or Conroe, where you can try golf at one of the many local courses or visit Sam Houston National Forest, where outdoor lovers can enjoy year-round hiking. End up in Dallas, where JFK was shot and home to a lot of shopping centres.
Stop off in Katy or La Grange, a unique small town Texas experience filled with history, culture, trendy shops and delicious cuisine. Or visit Bastrop and take a stroll along the Colorado River, or Brenham, with its outside activities like geocaching, wineries and lavender farms. Austin is known to embrace alternative cultures and is home to the State Capitol, a beautiful building. Depending on when you are there, you may be able to hit up one of the many music and film festivals.
Only about an hour's drive southeast from the city, Houstonians go to Galveston island for its Gulf Coast beach, the Strand, Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston and Moody Gardens. Popular with locals, many of whom own summer houses here, Galveston offers lots to do including Haak vineyard and the Texas Seaport Museum which is home to several historic ships. There is also a Pleasure Pier, which can provide house of fun.
With four miles of less crowded beaches, offering an alternative to Galveston, about an hour’s drive away from Houston. Enjoy a variety of activities from surfing and other water sports including jet skis and boats, to crabbing over the pier. Fishing is also possible here and you can buy fresh shrimp and fish over the bridge in Clute or Lake Jackson.
Stroll along the boardwalk, which provides a great selection of restaurants and amusement rides, located south of Houston and on the way to Galveston Island. Visit the Johnson Space centre, which is great for a personal tour or ‘Murder by chocolate’, a dinner theatre that is great for families.
