A former British colony, Antigua has many architectural reminders of its colonial past, from the sugar plantations, to the Georgian buildings at Nelson’s Dockyard and the fortress at Shirley Heights. Christopher Columbus named Antigua as he sailed past the island in 1493. The British colonised it in the 17th century, when it became a sugar-cane producer. With strong trade winds and a near perfect coral reef, it was also perfect for hiding the navy, characteristics that now attract tourists for world-class sailing and snorkelling.

Year round sunshine is almost guaranteed on Antigua, the Caribbean’s driest island. Annual rainfall averages only 45 inches; making it the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands. The Northeast trade winds are nearly constant, flagging only in September, making it perfect for sailing most of the year. With low humidity and temperatures staying above 20 degrees all year, you will have plenty of chance to relax on one of Antigua’s 365 beaches.

Being a relatively small island with just 15 miles of roads, it doesn’t take long to get around Antigua. Hiring a car is a popular activity to see the entire island; you just need to pay for a permit to drive on Antigua as well as the rental fee. Taxis have fixed fares to airports and hotels that you can find out locally, and taxi drivers are qualified tour guides for sightseeing trips.

There is a mandatory USD28 or ECD70 per person airport departure tax for Antigua. This is applicable for all travellers staying longer than 24 hours who are over the age of 12. Payment may be made at the Departure Tax Desk. It is cash payment only so please make sure you have budgeted for this on your Antigua holiday.
