Checked baggage allowances

A green suitcase.

You'd be surprised what you can fit in a suitcase when you fly with us. Our with-baggage fares include at least one bag per person of up to 23kg. All you have to do is make sure the zip shuts.

How to work out your allowance

If you already have a booking with us, the easiest way to check is to log into Manage My Booking where your personal allowance has been worked out for you.

Check your allowances in Manage My Booking

Alternatively, for allowances on British Airways flights, refer to the tables below according to your intended class of travel.

Other airlines

If your journey is partly or entirely with another airline your allowance may differ. See Allowances on other airlines below for details.

Hand baggage only (Basic)

If you are travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare, checked baggage is extra, but children and infants can check a fully collapsible pushchair (stroller) and a car seat.

If you need to check any bags in, you can pay to do so at any time before you fly. You’ll get the best rate if you pay online in advance.

Bag sizes and bulky items

A checked bag can be up to 90cm x 75cm x 43cm (35.5in x 29.5in x 16in) – including any bits that stick out, like the handle, pockets and wheels.

Sporting goods and musical instruments

We have special arrangements for sporting equipment like skis and surfboards and large musical instruments. In many cases these can be carried as part of your free baggage allowance.

Carrying sporting goods and musical instruments

Other oversized bags

Larger items of up to 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in) can be carried for an additional over-sized bag charge. (Currently, we waive this charge so you do not pay it.)

Any items larger than 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in) require separate shipping as cargo.

Allowances on British Airways

Including OpenSkies and CityFlyer

We can't make packing fun but with our inclusive baggage allowances at least you'll have one less thing to worry about.
Our free baggage allowance uses a piece system, with a maximum weight for each piece of luggage. Sorry, it's not possible to split the maximum weight across more than one piece of baggage, unless your baggage allowance is more than one piece of baggage.

If your journey includes flights in more than one class, the more generous allowance will apply to your whole journey (unless the flights are on separate bookings then each class's allowance will apply to the individual flight). For example:

  • You fly from Manchester to London in UK Domestic and connect from London to Rome in Club Europe. The Club Europe allowance applies to your entire journey.
  • You fly from London to Dubai in World Traveller and return in World Traveller Plus. The World Traveller Plus allowance applies to your entire journey.

It's possible to take more bags than your free allowance for an additional fee. You’ll get the best rate if you pay online in advance.

More about taking extra bags

Bags between 23 and 32kg (51–70lb) may incur additional charges depending on your allowance. Any bag over 32kg (70lb) will require separate shipping as cargo.

collapsedshowWheelchairs and mobility aids
  • If you're travelling to/from the US, you can take an unlimited number of wheelchairs or mobility aids in addition to your free baggage allowance, as long as it’s for your personal use.
  • If you're travelling to/from any other country, you can take up to two wheelchairs or mobility aids in addition to your free baggage allowance.

Guidance on carrying wheelchairs

Allowances on other airlines

If your journey includes a flight with an airline other than British Airways, your checked baggage allowance may be different.

  • Providing every flight in your journey has a BA code (e.g. BA1234) you will get British Airways’ checked baggage allowance, even if some or all of the flights are operated by other airlines. Many of the flights we sell on ba.com for other airlines fall into this category and are known as codeshares.
  • If your journey includes a mixture of BA and other airline codes (e.g. AA1122 or IB3210) you will get the allowance of the most significant carrier – usually the airline operating the longest part of the journey.
  • If every flight in your journey has another airline’s code, you will get that airline’s baggage allowance.
