A Roman Holiday

Rome is a fascinating city, one with a long and magnificent history, which becomes more charming with each visit. Its great food, better wine and the effortless style of its inhabitants will bring you back for more.

Go shopping along the upmarket Via Condotti and the Via Cola di Rienzo, which sits behind the stunning Castel Sant’ Angelo, or check out the vintage stores of Monti. Visit gourmet restaurants, or try suppli and gelato at the brilliant Testaccio food market, Rome has some of the best cuisine in Europe. See the Vatican on the left bank of the Tiber, or head to Aventine Hill, whose verdant gardens offer spectacular views of the resplendent city below. Or immerse yourself in the piazza culture of San Lorenzo – watch the world go by as you enjoy a well-deserved aperitivo – after your day of sightseeing Rome’s bountiful monuments. Holidays in Rome don’t get much better.

Pantheon

Wander the streets of the Centro Storico to the Pantheon. As you step into the beam of light look up and marvel at the Rotunda – a coffered concrete dome with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. Romans had perfected the use of arches which helped sustain the weight of their magnanimous buildings.

Ponte Sant'Angelo

Take a leisurely stroll towards the River Tiber, following no particular route – you'll discover so much more. Walk over the Rome Ponte Sant'Angelo bridge to admire its travertine marble façade and overseeing angels. Completed in 134 AD, by Roman Emperor Hadrian, to span the Tiber from the city centre to his newly constructed mausoleum – now the towering Castel Sant'Angelo.

Castel Sant’Angelo

The Mausoleum of Hadrian, known as Castel Sant'Angelo, is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano. Initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Avoid visiting on a Monday as it's closed.

Basilica di San Pietro

The Basilica di San Pietro, in Vaticano, is one of the largest churches in the world and is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. If time is not permitting then visit a nearby roof top bar or restaurant to admire the cupola. The Gran Meliá Rome hotel is nearby and a particular favourite place to stop for refreshments.

Piazza Navona.

Piazza Navona

Head back to the Piazza Navona – Rome's most iconic public square. Marvel at the lavish Baroque architecture, find the three fountains, but most importantly enjoy a spot of people watching over a glass of vino. Etabli Caffe is one of my favourites, located on Vicolo delle Vacche, just off Pizza Navona. It is a chic, yet retro style bar with a great wine list and serves delicious tapas or a light evening dinner.
