Mauritius areas guide

Choose the perfect area for your Mauritius holiday

North coast.

In the north you’ll find the resort town of Grand Baie, a tourist hotspot which offers great dining and nightlife. Although many of the beaches have been claimed by the hotels that line the coastline, you can still find hidden inlets and quieter beachside villages nearby. Stay at the LUX* Grand Gaube  which is situated next to a quiet fishing village, on the north coast. Or get more for your money at the great-value Zilwa Attitude.

North west coast.

The sheltered north west side of the island is home to the capital, Port Louis – which is the islands largest city. Representing an exciting blend of cultures, the hustle and bustle of the streets, ethnic quarters and preserved colonial buildings provide a wonderful contrast to the beaches that line the coast. This area is also home to the world-class Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. Absorb the relaxed atmosphere of great-value Coin De Mire Attitude or enjoy the beautiful stretch of beach and fantastic facilities of Trou Aux Biches.

East coast.

Mauritius is blessed with many picture-perfect beaches, but on the east coast you’ll discover some of the islands most beautiful and celebrated stretches of coastline. Make sure you visit Belle Mare, where the miles of sandy beach are perfect for long coastal walks. From budget-friendly accommodation like Emeraude Beach Attitude to indulgent luxury resorts like Long Beach, you’ll find something for every budget and holiday type.

South coast.

Thought of as the scenic south, the southern tip of the island provides a rugged coastline – with lots of bays, coves and off-shore reefs – which are great for snorkelling. The islands wilder side provides plenty of opportunity for outdoor adventures, with unusual rock formations, waterfalls, rivers and verdant sugar plantations waiting to be explored. If you’re seeking a slower pace, experience the award-winning spa facilities at Shanti Maurice - A Nira Resort  or enjoy the fantastic golf facilities of Heritage Awali Golf and Spa Resort and Heritage Le Telfair Golf and Spa Resort.

West/south west coast.

On the south west coast you’ll find the resort town of Flic en Flac, which is home to the longest beach on the island and a great place to go for eating out. While the calm, flat beaches of the west are favoured by families, as the coastline approaches the dramatic landscape of the south it introduces great surf spots and breathtaking clifftop walks. Stay at the colonial-style Sugar Beach Resort or enjoy the family-friendly facilities of La Pirogue and Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa.
