Get the most out of your trip to the Netherlands, journey to the picturesque Waterland region just north of the city. Visit the charming Broek, or the wonderful fishing villages of Monnickendam and Marken – where the older generation still wear traditional dress. Venture a bit further to the vibrant city of Rotterdam, or to the government seat of The Hague – the gothic Binnenhof building is a sight not to be missed. Or see the more traditional side of Holland in Zaanse Schans, whose beautiful windmills are a reminder of Europe’s industrial heritage.
British Airways car hire, in partnership with Avis, includes all of the mandatory charges that you'll need to drive away your car in Amsterdam.
Head just north of Amsterdam and you’ll find the wonderfully stereotypical Waterland region, made up of picturesque villages, dykes, canals and of course, windmills. Visit the picturesque village of Broek in Waterland, which was visited by Napoleon in 1811 and has changed little since. Equally charming and worthy of a visit is the fishing village of Volendam, with its historic buildings, bustling harbour and fascinating museum. And who can resist a trip to Edam, home of the delicious cheese, whose famous cheese market in summer has been operating since the 16th century.
Feel as though you’ve travelled back to 17th century Holland at the quaint village of Zaanse Schans, 21km from Amsterdam. Drive past beautiful dykes lined with working windmills then step inside to see the mills in action. Watch clogs being made at the Wooden Shoe Workshop and sample delicious freshly-made produce at De Catherinahoeve cheese farm. Visit Zaanse Museum to learn more about the village’s fascinating industrial history.
Use your Amsterdam car hire to drive to Aalsmeer and see the millions of colourful blooms awaiting sale at the world’s largest flower auction. Then take in the stunning architecture, go on a shopping spree or experience the hip nightlife of Rotterdam – especially around Oude Haven. Visit the famous Delft Blue earthenware factory en route to the cosmopolitan coastal city The Hague. Spend a summer’s day wandering around the lively seaside resort of Scheveningen, and don’t miss the incredible Madurodam miniature park.
Utrecht is one of the Netherland’s oldest cities, and its religious capital. A stunning medieval centre welcomes you, with the Dom Tower dominating the skyline. As in Amsterdam, canals flow through the city and act as beautiful highways and beacons to navigate with. Utrecht is also a somewhat overlooked city, and you will enjoy a relative quiet compared to Amsterdam or Rotterdam. With a large student population, you’ll find a vibrant and hip city, full of cool bars and live music venues.
Holland is synonymous with floral beauty and there is nowhere with more of this in abundance than Keukenhof Flower Gardens.
