Agadir

While most of Europe is shivering through winter, Agadir is usually basking in one of its 300 annual warm, sunny days. A historic town largely rebuilt since a 1960 earthquake, this easy-going beach resort is proof that modern development doesn’t have to be overbearing.

Agadir’s beach is a huge sandy sweep, backed by a palm-lined promenade flanked by modern buildings that never rise too high, and busy with strollers wandering by its cafés and restaurants.  Away from the seafront is Souk El-Had, North Africa’s third largest market. While this area is a great place to buy local Berber textiles or try traditional Moroccan food such as earthenware-baked tagines, there’s more to Agadir than just eating, shopping and sunbathing. Overlooking the city is the restored kasbah fortress, while nearby inland are the rock pools and waterfalls of the palm-filled Paradise Valley gorge.
