Fly directly to Stavanger from London and you’ll arrive in a historic fishing city, made rich originally through herring fishing and latterly through oil. The traditional painted wooden buildings around the harbor have been joined with more contemporary developments and there’s a feeling of being in a boom town.
The population is boosted by oil-workers, who spend their land leave eating alongside the Norwegians in seafood restaurants and in the lively, late-night bars – often drinking beer from the famous local artisan brewer, Lervig. Once you’ve explored the city’s main sights, the old town, and the museums, take a boat ride out into the archipelago and join the locals in their admiration of the surrounding fjords and dramatic rock faces.
British Airways flights to Stavanger from London take only one hour 45 minutes. You will then find yourself at the heart of one of Norway’s most scenic regions and in a friendly and prosperous city, a great place for a leisurely city break.
There are two British Airways flights a day from London Heathrow (LHR) Terminal 5 to Stavanger (SVG). Choose to fly with hand baggage only or pick a price that includes a 23kg checked baggage allowance and free seat selection 24 hours before you fly – both options include complimentary on-board drinks and snacks.
Fly non-stop from London to Stavanger for a city break that combines cultural sightseeing with beautiful natural surroundings. After a short one hour 45 minute flight from London you’ll find yourself in one of Scandinavia’s most laid-back cities surrounded by some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery.
The airport is an easy 15km (9 mile) journey southwest of the city. The 25-minute ride by airport bus costs around £11 and it will stop at most of the main hotels. There are also taxis and car rental services. Stavanger’s main sights are all within easy walking distance. For trips further afield, there are reliable boat and bus services.
There are duty free shops both sides of customs and free wireless internet access throughout the airport. Beyond security is the fully licensed Barometer Bar, and the Simply Good restaurant where you can treat yourself to a traditional cinnamon bun, or go for more healthy options such as salads and fresh juices.
