San Diego offers a cool and calm atmosphere with friendly crowds, set to burst with culture. This diverse city boasts idyllic year-round temperatures and sun-kissed sandy beaches. Full of great bars, gourmet restaurants and inspiring shopping, San Diego is a bustling metropolis worthy of your time.
Though perhaps not as well-known as a holiday destination as other Californian cities, you will be drawn into its relaxed, easy-going environment. With a charm and sophistication you might not see in LA and a laid-back surf culture not found in affluent San Francisco. The iconic Gaslamp Quarter with its old-timey bars and cafés, the ornate Spanish Renaissance buildings in Balboa Park and the US Navy’s ever-watchful presence are just a few of the things to see downtown. Outside of the city, you can explore the stunning Pacific coastline, head across Mexico’s border to Tijuana or go surfing with sea lions in La Jolla, the ‘Jewel’ of San Diego. ‘America’s finest city’ is welcoming, and has some of the happiest inhabitants of any city in the US – and they have everything to be happy about.
To get to Carlsbad, take the North County Coaster train from Downtown. This idyllic spot is a haven for sun-worshippers and surfers. Ideal for families to build sandcastles on the glorious golden stretches. Take the coast Highway, which hugs the coastline, from La Jolla to Oceanside, to admire spectacular views of the Pacific. Antique boutiques and wonderful cafés greet you in the village, or head to the Premium Outlet mall for more high-end shopping. The local Omni la Costa Resort offers one of the best spas in the USA.
Get the trolley from Downtown, sail on the ferry or drive across the awesome Coronado Bridge to this wonderful bay side resort-town. Here you will find quaint stores and lush, manicured gardens waiting to be explored. At the Ferry Landing, stop for lunch amidst galleries and boutiques. The legendary Hotel del Coronado has held court over the island since 1888 and its unmistakable conical turrets are as iconic as the island itself. Perfect beaches and gentle lapping waves complete the experience, so grab a towel and find your space in the sun.
In San Diego’s bustling Downtown, you will find everything you could hope for. From the wonderful architecture of the Embarcadero boardwalk and Seaport Village to Little Italy’s café culture and Petco Park – home to the San Diego Padres. There is great nightlife, fine cuisine and brilliant shopping to be had on every corner. Head to the massive Balboa Park for museums, theatres and art. Here you’ll find the famous San Diego Zoo, which is home to hundreds of animals and ideal for family days out. Spend the evening in the iconic Gaslamp Quarter to experience fine dining and bars.
The Gaslamp Quarter is a relatively small area of San Diego, but with a huge amount of great nightlife on offer. Victorian-era architecture stands alongside modern skyscrapers, welcoming visitors to this diverse and chic area. Pubs and restaurants stand on every corner, enticing guests with smells and sounds of cuisines from all over the world. From American to Armenian, you will find something for you. Don’t miss Taco Tuesdays, which happens all over the city – we recommend heading to La Puerta for cheap tacos and beers until late.
Pronounced ‘la hoya’, this is one of the most beautiful places in southern California. Savour the natural splendour of ‘the jewel’ of San Diego – year-round sunshine, glorious beaches and clear, warm waters ideal for surfing. Hike the surrounding trails to find the incredible local flora and fauna in the Torrey Pines State Reserve. Visit the excellent Museum of Contemporary Art or play golf at the famous Torrey Pines course. The comfortable Hyatt Regency La Jolla is the ideal hotel for a trip to the seaside.
San Diego is well-known for its quintessential Californian beach lifestyle – surfers, sailing boats and sun-kissed people relaxing by the shore. The incredible 4,500-acre Mission Bay Park offers all this and more. You can try adrenalin-pumping water sports or sit back and enjoy a leisurely cruise around the bay. Stroll along the boardwalk, where people congregate for barbecues along Pacific Beach. Head into the cool surf shops or stop at a beachfront café for a simple yet delicious lunch. SeaWorld® is sure to be a fun day out for the children.
With the third longest coastline in the USA, more than 300 sunshine days a year and over 200 species of marine life, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained beyond the theme parks.
