Ready, steady, shop!

Ready, steady, shop!

The people of Newcastle love to shop almost as much as they love to party, and the city’s streets are packed with enough stores to keep even the speediest shoppers busy. Locals flock to Eldon Square Shopping Centre on the weekends, and with over 150 brands to choose from, including Apple, Hollister and Topshop, it’s not hard to see why.

The castle that named a city

The castle that named a city

Head to Castle Keep to discover the story behind the city, including how it got its name. This ancient monument is a Norman Keep, built in 1178, but sits on the site of a wooden ‘New Castle’ built by the son of William the Conqueror. Our top tip: climb to the rooftop which boasts an outstanding view of the River Tyne and its seven bridges.

Stand at the feet of an angel

Stand at the feet of an angel

As Rio de Janeiro has Christ The Redeemer, Newcastle has the Angel of the North. This iconic sculpture by British artist Antony Gormley is perched on a hilltop overlooking a motorway, and is seen by over 150,000 visitors a year. At 20 metres high, it’s believed to be the largest angel sculpture in the world, and makes for a very impressive photo. If you don’t have a car, get there by hopping on the Angel Bus from Eldon Square Bus Station in Newcastle or Gateshead Interchange.

A bridge with a difference

A bridge with a difference

There are 10 bridges connecting Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Gateshead, but the one you don’t want to miss is the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. It’s the world’s first and only tilting bridge, and we’re pretty sure it’s one of the coolest bridges in the world. When the bridge tilts, the two steel arches making up the body of the bridge, undergo a metamorphous into a grand arch in an operation that evokes the slow opening of a huge eye. The bridge tilts daily at 12:00, and at specific times to allow ships to pass underneath.
