Fly drive Malaga

Take one day to explore the countryside around the towns of Ronda and Gaucin. This route starts at San Pedro de Alcantera, just past Puerto Banus, and ends up just a few miles down the coast at Estepona. Highlights include the best-known Sierra town of all, Ronda, with its famous gorge and Spain’s oldest bullring. And the Eagle’s Castle in Gaucin, with other architectural examples located throughout the village.

Visit the Sherry capital of the world on a day trip to Jerez. British winemakers have been active here for centuries, and tours of the cellars are available at the central sherry production houses. Jerez is just as famous for its Flamengo, with a two-week festival held every year. Horse riding and breeding is an important pastime of this town, displayed at the Royal Equestrian school.

Take a day to visit one of Spain’s must see cities. Seville is home to a stunning cathedral, as well as the Archive of the Indies – where historical records of the discovery of the American continent are kept. Climb the steps of the Giralda Tower to enjoy magnificent city views, or visit the Royal Palace known as Alcazar with its terrific gardens. Granada showcases Antequera, Roman, Moorish and Bronze Age remains. Visit the famous Alhambra Palace, set at the foot of Spain’s highest mountain range – the Sierra Nevada. The Sacromonte hill, which overlooks the city from the North, is famous for its cave dwellings – once the home of Granada's large gypsy community.

Southern Portugal offers both busy tourist resorts and sleepy fishing villages dotted along pretty coastlines. Explore its rich history, savour its local food and enjoy its Latin warmth. This route takes you from the coast of Malaga, southwest along to San Pedro, before going inland up the spectacular mountain road to Ronda. Pass through Algodonales, heading southeast down to the plains and over to Jerez. Take the motorway north to Seville and then head west, through Huelva.
