Fly to Lyon and discover the real culinary capital of France. With over 2,000 years of history, a city break to Lyon gives you choice between the Renaissance grandeur of its Vieux Lyon quarter, the steep passageways of its Croix-Rousse silk weavers’ district and the elegant boulevards and chic restaurants and bars of the Brotteaux neighbourhood.
Flights to Lyon also bring you very close to some of the most beautiful parts of rural France. The medieval walled city of Pérouges is just beyond the city, while the Alps and the lakeside resort of Annecy are less than two hours drive away. The stark Forez range of the Massif Central Mountains is well off the beaten track and under an hour’s drive to the west.
British Airways flights from London to Lyon take 1 hour 35 minutes. Lyon airport lies 13 miles east of the city centre. It contains three terminals, with British Airways flights operating from Terminal 3.
British Airways flies direct from London Heathrow (LHR) to Lyon Saint Exupéry airport (LYS) several times a day. Choose to fly with hand baggage only or pick a price that includes a 23kg checked baggage allowance and free seat selection 24 hours before you fly - both options include complimentary on-board drinks and snacks.
Lyon airport is connected to central Lyon by the fast Rhônexpress train, which departs from the airport for Lyon’s Part Dieu station roughly every 15 minutes, with a journey time of 25 minutes. Direct buses also connect the airport to the cities of Grenoble and Chambéry. Within the city, Lyon has a network of four metro lines, four tramlines, three trolley buses and two funiculars, with easy-to-read maps and interchangeable tickets for the whole system.
Lyon airport offers some good places to eat, ranging from the Fournil de Pierre’s traditional French bakery to the serious, multi-course Atelier des 2 rives (which serves modern French cooking at lunchtime only). Shopping options in the departure lounge include music and computer store Fnac, Occitane de Provence beauty products and Aelia Duty Free, which sells regional wines.
