Stroll from royal residence to hip hangout

The Danes have always seen Copenhagen both for what it has been and what it can be, the city is full of transformation stories. A polluted harbour cleaned up and opened to the public in the form of glorious bathing pools. An emptying meat factory district turned into a hip mecca of nightlife. A self-declared independent commune built on the ground of a disused military base.

Take a leaf out of Hans Christian Andersen’s book and head to oft-papped Nyhavn, a 17th Century canal lined with colourful houses ranging from mustard yellow to periwinkle blue. Cycle along the city’s harbour and meet a wistful little mermaid staring out at the sea. Consider a royal throne said to be crafted with unicorn horns inside a Renaissance palace and board a Ferris wheel at a nostalgic theme park so magical it inspired Walt Disney. Jump into the weird, the wonderful and the whimsical – book your flight to Copenhagen now.

Carefully selected Copenhagen hotels

Best hotels in Copenhagen for all types of traveller

We have a great selection of quality hotels in Copenhagen to recommend. Copenhagen Admiral Hotel is situated along the vibrant Nyhavn in a heritage-listed building brimming with wooden beams. Also sitting proudly on the iconic ‘new harbour’ is 71 Nyhavn Hotel, where simple Scandi elegance reigns in two converted 1800s warehouses.

You’re never far from water on a Copenhagen city break and at Copenhagen Island, where the harbour hugs every side of the hotel, you’ll be as close as you can get. If you’re looking to seriously spread out, Copenhagen Marriott Hotel boasts some of the largest hotel rooms in the city.

Meanwhile, Nobis Hotel Copenhagen has an impressive facade and history. The landmark building was once home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music, meaning there’s a suite that was once a concert hall and a grand marble staircase where revellers once gathered for galas.

Copenhagen holiday FAQs

  1. Experience the enchantment of Tivoli Gardens, where warm yellow lights twinkle in every direction and hanging lanterns glow above the heads of joy-seekers. Choose your horse on a charming carousel, ride along wooden tracks on one of the oldest rollercoasters in the world, and soar above the glittering city on a swing. Admire bouquets of handmade lollipops striped and swirled with vivid colours then take one with you on a stroll around the flourishing gardens. The second-oldest amusement park in the world doesn’t seem to be running out of magic any time soon.
  2. Staring up at the green-topped towers of Rosenborg Castle, you might just feel like you’ve opened the first page of a storybook. Step into the fairytale and ascend the spiral steps inside Christian IV’s Renaissance castle. Wander alongside an array of finery from sparkling crown jewels dripping in diamonds and emeralds to a throne decorated with what were once said to be unicorn horns (they were later revealed to be narwhal tusks). Don't forget to look to the portraits for royal tales, including one about a scandalous love affair.
  3. Copenhagen has plenty of museums apt for hours of dreaming and discovering. Marvel at Viking treasures before stepping further back in time to meet famous women from the Bronze Age, like the Egtved Girl, at the National Museum of Denmark. Delve into the big and small stories that make up the capital at the Museum of Copenhagen. Then find out what keeps Copenhageners smiling at the Museum of Happiness.
  4. Relax in a graveyard. Picnic with Hans Christian Andersen and Soren Kierkegaard at Assistens Cemetery, one of the most popular leisure spots in the city where locals are known to lay out among the gravestones. Soak up the sun and cycle through quiet paths shaded by leafy trees. In spring, head to Bispebjerg Cemetery and walk under a canopy of pastel pink cherry blossoms.
  5. With so much water around, it’s no wonder Copenhageners love to take a dip. In the summer (and, for those brave enough, the winter) they unwind in sparkling harbour pool baths with city skyline views. For an iconic swim, slap on your swimming goggles and suntan lotion at Islands Brygge. Visiting in the chillier months? Get cosy in a hot tub and watch steam rise into the crisp Copenhagen air.
  6. Find out why foodies flock to the city. Across Copenhagen, the sweet smell of sticky pastries wafts through bakery doors. Expect the likes of cardamom buns, cinnamon ‘snails’, Danish dream puffs and the need for plenty of napkins. For savoury delights, open sandwiches (smorrebrod) and classic Danish hot dogs from vendors are easy to come by. Also easy to find are Michelin-starred restaurants – after all, this is the city in which Noma, hailed by some as the best restaurant in the world, cracked Denmark’s culinary scene wide open.
  • For the Copenhagen seen on postcards, cobblestone streets and snug townhouses included, head to Indre By – translated to ‘inner city’. Spy wooden ships from a canal-side cafe along the Nyhavn. Witness the changing of the guards under a noon sun at Amalienborg Palace and step into the home of the Danish parliament at Christiansborg Palace. Stay in this area for Copenhagen hotels close to historic landmarks.
  • Make your way over Dronning Louses Bridge to reach uber-cool Norrebro. This district is all about diversity and a visit to one of its lip-smacking shawarma shops is on many a foodie’s to-do list. Play chess in the eccentric and undeniably Instagram-worthy Superkilen park, spend a long afternoon alongside locals at Assistens Cemetery, then watch the swan boats bob on the lakes at a waterside restaurant.
  • Expect the unexpected in Vesterbro. You’ll find cafes, communal spaces and vast warehouses filled with offbeat art in what used to be Copenhagen’s red-light district. The neighbourhood even has its own ‘Little Paris’. The Meatpacking District in Vesterbro has also undergone a transformation and, thanks to the creative mixologists and brave new brewers who moved in when the butchers left, this industrial space is now the place to go for Copenhagen nightlife.
  • Try life like a local in Osterbro. Touted as one of the greenest neighbourhoods in Copenhagen, this affluent area sees many a serene couple walking hand in hand through its parks and along its promenade. Follow the crowds to spot The Little Mermaid before turning your attention to her sister, the ‘genetically modified’ mermaid, a few hundred metres away. Then lay your towel down on Svanemollen Beach – yes, Copenhagen has a beach.
  • Cross the city’s inner harbour to reach the collection of islands that make up Christianshavn. Amble along delightful walkways lined with higgledy-piggledy houses inside self-declared independent commune Freetown Christiania, remembering to respect its rules. Climb up the winding spire of Our Saviour's, a baroque church with bells that ring out across the district, and from way above the rooftops decide for yourself whether you think the nearby Opera House looks like a toaster. Take in the magnificent vista as you reflect on your Copenhagen holiday.
