Once known mostly for its proximity to Canada’s top mountain resorts and its signature cowboy festival, Cowtown’s attractions and distractions have dramatically expanded and proliferated.
Urban activities such as fly-fishing on the Bow River and even taking in the mountain view from the glass-floored observation deck of the Calgary Tower and its upscale Sky 360 restaurant are must dos. There’s also browsing the high-street shops of Stephen Avenue Walk and Uptown 17th Avenue as well as picnicking at a summertime music festival in Prince’s Island Park.
Centred on Stephen Avenue Walk, the city’s downtown arts district is thriving. Here you’ll find EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, which puts on hundreds of theatre, music and dance events annually. Nearby, Glenbow Museum’s western cultural exhibits focus on Alberta’s maverick personalities, local First Nations and high-profile travelling art exhibitions.
City attractions have upped their game. The new TELUS Spark science centre features cutting-edge, interactive exhibits, while the neighbouring Calgary Zoo has launched the popular Penguin Plunge. Heritage Park Historical Village now features year-round exhibits, shopping, dining and cultural events. Canada Olympic Park, the city’s alpine sport facility, also offers all-season attractions such as mountain bike trails, Skyline Luge and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Calgary’s restaurant rows are bursting with new, contemporary dining options. Internationally known spots such as Rouge, Charcut Roasthouse and Rush lead the city’s burgeoning cuisine renaissance. City nights might include notorious party stop Cowboys Nightclub & Casino, two-stepping to country hits at Ranchman’s Cookhouse & Dancehall or enjoying live alternative bands and DJs at Commonwealth Bar & Stage.
Stephen Avenue Walk, the city’s historic sandstone pedestrian promenade, features shops from John Fluevog and Out There to Coppeneur Chocolate as well as The CORE, an upscale, atrium-style shopping centre whose major tenant is designer department store Holt Renfrew. Boutiques and fashion franchises mingle along Uptown 17th Avenue, while the Inglewood neighbourhood’s blooming indie boutique strip is proudly mall-free.
