British Airways fly direct from Heathrow with two weekly flights, on Wednesday and Sunday, ideal for a long weekend. Biarritz is a historic city, beginning as a spa destination for 19th century aristocrats, before blossoming into a glamourous luxury coastal resort in the 1920s. This splendid history can be seen in its spectacular architecture, ranging from the Baroque through to Art Deco stylings. It is also now considered one of the best surf spots in Europe, attracting a bohemian crowd alongside its more affluent summer visitor. Due to its position on the border of France and Spain, you will notice three cultures here – French, Basque and Spanish – merging their distinct cuisine, sports and traditions.

Seaside spas

Built as a coastal spa retreat in the mid-18th century, Biarritz has been a place of therapy since its conception. Modern thalassotherapy and its methods use seawater as a cure, exploiting the Atlantic Ocean to treat many an ailment. Biarritz’s beaches are known for having a lot of seaweed, which contains iodine, creating a natural healing power in the water. So don’t miss out on a trip to the spa. Follow a morning being pampered with a relaxing afternoon at the beach, sipping local wine watching the sunset.

Surfing

While as luxurious as its name suggests, Biarritz isn’t just opulence and old-world charm. Surfing was introduced here in 1957, by travelling Californian screenwriter Peter Vertel, who shipped his board over after seeing the spectacular waves breaking along the shore. It is now considered one of the best surf spots in Europe, holding frequent surf competitions and bringing surfers flocking each season. The Grande Plage has sections for surfers, and all along the 6km of coast you will see surfers testing their nerve in the waves.

Sightseeing

Biarritz has its fair share of stunning architecture, including casinos, galleries and museums that were built in the golden years of the early 20th century. The eye-catching Hôtel du Palais, which overlooks the Grande Plage, was formerly the summer villa of Empress Eugenie and is now the best hotel in the city. Visit the Rocher de la Vierge (Rock of the Virgin), whose juxtaposing marble statue and craggy outcropping is a sight to behold as crashing waves spray. Or visit the impressive Musée de le Mer, a beautiful Art Deco structure housing examples of local sea life, the flora and fauna of the Bay of Biscay.

Food and drink

Biarritz is influenced by three different cultures and this is reflected in the food. Basque pintxo appetisers and Spanish-infused dishes sit alongside French classics. Being a seaside resort, you can expect to find many a seafood restaurant. Try the Le Crabe Tambour for a traditional Basque restaurant, who serve platters of bacalhau (salt cod) and monkfish surrounded by seafood and baked potatoes. For a more luxurious dinner, head to the Hôtel du Palais, whose Michelin-starred Villa Eugenie looks out onto the Atlantic. A grandiose flashback to a more opulent era.

Golf

Known as a golfing haven since the English aristocracy called it their summer home. The famous Biarritz Le Phare (the lighthouse) course first opened in 1888, featuring sweeping fairways and a breathtaking view of the ocean. Biarritz has ten courses within its municipal limits, with some great options for the avid golfer. Practice your swing in glorious sunshine and sink a few putts before après golf drinks in the city. Alternatively, visit the Golf d'Arcangues, just ten minutes outside of Biarritz for a stunning private course in the rolling landscape of the Basque countryside.
