Extra and overweight baggage

Suitcases and bags.

There's a definite art to packing but even the most talented people sometimes end up with more gear than they can fit in their allowance. A heavy bag can incur an extra charge at check-in or need shipping separately as cargo. Buying extra baggage allowance is an easy, cost-effective solution and we offer some great rates for any situation.

Extra bags with British Airways

  • You can pay to take up to a total of 10 checked bags per person, including your free allowance. e.g. if your free allowance is one bag, you can buy an allowance for up to nine additional bags.
  • You get the best rates if you pay online before checking in for your flight – or just turn up with your extra bags and pay a higher rate at the airport.
  • You can pay to take extra bags for every passenger in your group except infants (children under two).
  • Each extra bag can be up to the same size and weight as a standard checked bag – see our checked baggage allowances page for details.

Our extra bag charges

Please choose from the dates below to view the charges relevant to you.

The rate you pay is based on when your ticket is issued. For ba.com bookings that's usually as soon as you make your booking. In some instances, such as travel agent and tour operator bookings, your ticket can be issued at any time, so please contact the booking agent to check the issue date before confirming which rate applies to you.

Charges are for British Airways, BA CityFlyer and OpenSkies flights. See "Extra and overweight baggage on other carriers" below for information on other airlines.

Charges are per one way per flight.

Charges for connecting journeys are calculated as follows:

  • from within Europe to Europe (e.g. Paris to Rome or Edinburgh to Madrid via London) – £65 per bag in all circumstances
  • connecting to or from beyond Europe (e.g. New York to Mumbai or Glasgow to Bangkok via London) – you pay the charge for just one of the flights; where the charges vary, you pay the greater one (e.g. for Glasgow to Bangkok, you would pay the charge for the London to Bangkok flight)

Charges are in UK pounds, US or Canadian dollars, and euros. If you are leaving from a country that uses a different local currency, the UK Pounds amount will be converted to the local currency.

Online purchase is not available on a few routes because local airport systems are unable to verify the purchase but you will be able to purchase an extra bag allowance at the airport.
