Lose yourself in the colours, sounds and smells of Marrakech – embrace the chaos of this fascinating city. The streets are filled with bundled donkey carts, speeding mopeds and delicious smells. Discover the famous Djemaa El-Fna square, sit back with a glass of mint tea and wonder at the snake charmers and story-tellers. Rich spices and pungent tanneries vie for attention in the labyrinthine passageways. While dazzling souks selling everything from saffron to jewel festooned slippers bewilder and excite. As the day turns to dusk, sit atop a riad roof terrace listening to the cries of enchanting calls to prayer. For those looking for a more relaxed time, make a trip out to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, to experience breathtaking views amid sublime, otherworldly landscapes.

See the very best of Marrakech with these memorable experiences

Medina.

The 12th century walled city of Medina is the historic heart of Marrakech. Starting in the iconic square of Djemaa el-Fna you will find a congregation of curious street vendors, snake charmers and storytellers. In the evening there is an unbelievable barbecue scene, with hundreds of chefs competing business. Honeycomb alleyways have you wandering through souks swathed in silks and bright fabrics. Stop to haggle for crafts, hand-wrought instruments and aromatic spices. Don’t miss the glorious Koutoubia Mosque and the architectural spectacle of the Bahia Palace.

Hivernage.

The Hivernage Quarter is a respite from the labyrinthine Medina, with wide palm-lined streets less packed with bustling crowds. You will find a slower pace, with trendy bars and chic cafes dotted along the terraces. Pamper yourself in the lavish five star hotels in Hivernage, such as the Four Seasons spa. Then dine at some of the finest restaurants in Morocco, with both traditional Moroccan and international cuisine on offer. Le Comptoir is a lively and popular venue for after-dinner drinks, and a great place to watch some belly-dancing at dusk.

Palmeraie.

You can find a relaxing respite from the urban throngs in tranquil Palmeraie. Amongst the lush palm trees, which earned this exclusive area its name, you will find five star hotels alongside the homes of Marrakech’s elite. Perfect for luxury holidays in Marrakech, the opulent Sahara Palace hotel offers a spectacular location and wonderful manicured gardens. Or unwind in the exquisitely beautiful and sought after surroundings of the award-winning Palais Namaskar.

Gueliz.

Known as the ‘French Quarter’ of Marrakech, Gueliz has a definite modern European feel. It is a great area for those looking for a break from the haggling and hassling of the Medina’s souks. Make your way here for luxury shopping and chic boutiques with fixed prices – a sometimes welcome return. You will find an abundance of lively bars and popular clubs, including the electrifying African Chic – where local celebs gather at the weekend. Alternatively, spend a cultural afternoon ambling around the magnificent oasis that is the Majorelle Garden.

Essaouria.

The charming fishing port of Essaouria, along Morocco’s western coast, has quaint buildings painted the traditional white and blue. The Atlantic Ocean laps six miles of rugged coastline, and whilst not warm enough for swimming or bathing, it is ideal for surfing and kite-surfing. If you are feeling less active, unwind at a traditional Hammam, which is less a massage and more a vigorous yet enjoyable rub down. Or wander around the souks of the walled medina, and haggle for a great bargain, before taking a sunset stroll along the battlements.

Atlas.

Located 30 minutes outside of the city to the south, the foothills are an ideal place to get away from the commotion of Marrakech. Visit with traditional Berber households, take in the heart-stopping scenery and drink in the beauty that North Africa offers. You will find luxury hotels here offering a beautiful setting to relax and unwind, with spas and hammams ready to cleanse both body and mind. If you are looking for a peaceful time, away from modern life, then this is the place for you.
