Children travelling alone

Girl playing outside with bubbles.

As a child, travelling alone can be an exciting experience, but as a parent you need to know your child will be taken care of. Children up to the age of 12 years can fly with us if they are accompanied by someone 16 years or older, or they can travel alone using our Skyflyer Solo service.

Our partner airlines may have different regulations, age limits and charges so please check with them directly.

Skyflyer Solo service

Skyflyer Solo is our dedicated service which gives you peace of mind that your child will be looked after throughout their whole journey.

Age of child Can you use our Skyflyer Solo?
Under 5 years Skyflyer Solo is unavailable, your child must travel with someone over the age of 16 years.
5 years You must book Skyflyer Solo but can only travel on BA non stop direct flights.
6-11 years You must book Skyflyer Solo and can travel on any BA flight.
12-17 years Your child can travel alone or use the Skyflyer Solo service*.

*Please note if your child is aged 12-15 and you want to book for them to travel alone, please contact your local British Airways office to make your booking. Bookings for children aged 16 or older travelling alone can be made online.

British Airways is unable to offer the Skyflyer Solo service in the following situations:

  • The Skyflyer Solo service cannot be used if the journey includes a transfer between London City, Heathrow or Gatwick airports.
  • The Skyflyer Solo service is not available if transferring from one flight to another at London Gatwick. All Skyflyer Solo bookings involving London Gatwick must start or end at London Gatwick.
  • We are unable to accept children on a flight with a night stop or stopover more than six hours, unless prior arrangements have been made by us on a BA connecting flight during the day time.
  • The Skyflyer Solo is not available on our London City/New York service.

Different legal requirements by country

Some countries' immigration departments require additional documentation for all children travelling into, out of or transitting their country. The extra documentation that you may require varies depending on the country, so please make sure you have everything you need before you travel.

The IATA Travel Centre can advise you what documentation is required for each country. Just make sure you use the date of birth of your child to ensure the extra requirements are displayed.

Check the IATA Travel centre for documentation required when travelling with children

Children with an Italian passport

  • Children, under 14 years of age, must hold a completed ‘Dichiarazione di Affido’ when travelling out of Italy. You must get this from a local police office as it is not available at the airport.
  • This form must be carried with your child’s passport and travel will be denied if the form is not completed.
  • If you do not live in Italy the authorisation can be issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate.

Due to these restrictions you must book our Skyflyer Solo service, for any child under 14 years, if they are travelling alone.

Children with a Romanian passport

Romanian state law requires that all Romanian national children up to 18 years of age travel accompanied by an adult or travel on our Skyflyer Solo service.

Children travelling alone to, from or transitting South Africa

The South African Immigration department has recently amended the requirements for children under 18 years of age travelling alone, whether travelling into, out of or transitting through South Africa. The requirements have undergone regular amendments, so please ensure you check with your local South African High Commission to ensure you have the correct paperwork for when your child is due to travel.
