It's known as Europe’s capital of hedonism, but there’s more to the island of Ibiza than just clubbing. Ibiza also retains many reminders of its long history, some of which have earned the island a UNESCO heritage listing.
Certainly, the nightclubs of Ibiza Town and San Antonio have attracted revellers for decades, arriving to enjoy the world’s best DJs, drink sunrise cocktails on the beach and sleep until late. Much of Ibiza, however, is still forested, quiet and rugged. Northern beaches like the secluded cove at Es Portixol still possess the calm that first attracted hippies to the island in the 1960s. At the height of the summer season Ibiza gets quite crowded, but even then there are quiet spots such as Atlantis, the former quarry and hidden beach near Cala d'Hort. Many old Ibiza hands come for the island’s warm spring and autumn, where beaches and restaurants are calmer and you’re more likely to be rubbing shoulders with the locals.
