Overview

The Caves is an all-inclusive, luxury hotel for adults only, perched on the dramatic limestone cliffs of Negril in Jamaica. This boutique-style property is widely recognised as one of Jamaica’s most romantic hotels with 12 unique cottages, including one luxurious villa, each enveloped by tropical surroundings. The sea cliffs are carved with steps leading down to an intimate grotto bar, private dining caves, multiple sea-view sundecks and a natural sea pool. Elsewhere, there’s an upscale spa, a clifftop bar, a saltwater pool and a whirlpool, all overlooking the Caribbean Sea. A wide range of complimentary activities are on offer, too, ranging from water sports and cliff-jumping, to yoga sessions and cooking classes.

The Caves lies next to the Negril Lighthouse, along Jamaica’s scenic West End coast. This clifftop hotel enjoys incredible sunset views across the Caribbean Sea, and you can hear the sound of crashing waves throughout the resort. Although there’s no beach, stairways lead down to the sea, where you’ll find in-built ladders on the rocks and sea caves which are ideal for snorkelling. A few local restaurants and bars are within walking distance, and the hotel offers transfers to the legendary Seven Mile Beach for a supplementary charge. The nearest airport is Montego Bay International Airport, around 53 miles from the hotel.

The 12 exclusive rooms are set in charming thatched-roof cottages, within tropical gardens on the clifftop. They each have a unique design, with colourful walls, louvered windows, hand-carved furnishings and batik fabrics. All rooms feature Royal Hut bathrobes and minibars with local drinks and snacks, while bathrooms provide locally sourced toiletries by Blue Mountain Aromatics. Accommodation options include one- and two-bedroom cottages and suites, and a luxurious villa with a private swimming pool. One Bedroom Upper Ocean View Suites afford dazzling views across the Caribbean Sea, but those seeking extra space might prefer a two-storey Two Bedroom Ocean Front Cottage with fantastic sea vistas.

The resort’s stone pathways wind through serene, tropical gardens awash with indigenous plants and trees. You can climb down the stairways along the cliff’s edge and relax on one of the private sundecks carved into the rocks. Further down, you’ll notice various diving platforms and ladder entrances into the sea. In the calm waters, you can enjoy kayaking, snorkelling, swimming and guided cliff-jumping lessons.

On the clifftop, take a dip in the saltwater swimming pool or whirlpool, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. You can also watch the sunset from a private indoor hot tub, subject to reservation and a supplementary charge. The nearby spa offers a range of treatments for an extra charge, including restorative Ayurveda treatments, couples' massages and the signature Jamaican brown sugar body scrub. You can also use the sauna and steam room facilities before your spa treatment in a private cabana – or a candlelit cave, enhanced by the soothing sounds of the ocean.

The hotel hosts various activities such as, yoga classes, cave snorkelling and nature walks. Gastronomes can enjoy weekly cooking classes, rum tasting sessions and mixology workshops, while adventurous types ride the hotel’s bicycles or book island excursions for an additional charge. There’s also a small on-site shop selling a range of beachwear and Jamaican souvenirs.

Dining information

The Gazebo dining area sits in a thatched-roof pavilion, overlooking the crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast here, including banana pancakes, made-to-order omelettes and fresh fruit platters. They serve local delights, such as steamed callaloo, fried dumplings and saltfish, too. Breakfast dishes are accompanied by freshly squeezed juices – including watermelon juice and nutritious smoothies.

The laidback Bamboo Terrace is the hotel’s main restaurant. It’s adorned with handcrafted bamboo furnishings and boasts panoramic views across the natural landscape. You can savour homemade snacks and drinks throughout the day and try high-quality Caribbean fare for dinner. The dishes incorporate seasonal and local ingredients, and the menu covers mixed salads, flavoursome curries, spicey stews, fresh seafood and grilled meats.

The Sands sits on the edge of the property, providing a relaxing retreat with seaside views, comfortable lounge chairs and a bar. Expect a vibrant atmosphere here in the evenings, especially on special nights when it opens to the public to serve authentic jerk chicken dishes straight from the barbeque. There’s also the intimate Blackwell Rum Bar, set in the cosy caves beside the sea, where you can try rum-based cocktails and watch magnificent sunsets.

Additionally, two dining grottos are nestled within the cliffs, where you can book a private five-course dinner, surrounded by flowers and hundreds of candles. Room service is also available, and cooking classes are held once per week on request.
