From Funchal, take the cable car up to the Monte neighbourhood for a fantastic view across the city from 600 metres above sea level – those brave enough can toboggan back down in a wicker basket, steered by two runners. The hotel is just over ten miles from Madeira International Airport.

The Casa Velha Dining Room is the hotel’s elegant dining option, flooded with light, overlooking the beautifully landscaped grounds. For breakfast, take a seat at a table, dressed in crisp white tablecloths to feast on an impressive continental menu of freshly baked pastries, assorted jams and spreads, cold cuts, fresh fruit, juices and eggs cooked to order. In the evening, the setting is more formal, perfect for those wanting to enjoy a candlelit meal from a menu of the finest cuisine, matched with a selection of Portuguese and international wines. Providing breathtaking views of Funchal Bay is Vista Balancal, headed up by chef Goncalo Bita Bota and his team. A menu of modern Portuguese dishes with a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian flavours is served, using seasonal ingredients. Head here for a bite to eat post-golf, or for lunch or dinner. For teas, coffee and a selection of homemade cakes, soup, sandwiches and salads, Casa de Cha (or Tea House) is the ideal choice. It’s located beside the hotel in Palheiro Gardens, right next to Palheiro Golf, and boasts an outdoor terrace for al fresco dining.
