The home of Portuguese royalty until the early 20th century, Sintra’s elaborate historical town centre is a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Beaches can be discovered at the traditional fishing village of Cascais and the sophisticated town of Estoril, a 20-minute and 15-minute drive away respectively – the casino at Estoril is rumoured to have inspired the first James Bond book, ‘Casino Royale’. The hotel is just over a 30-minute drive from Lisbon city centre and 25 minutes from Humberto Delgado Airport.

Originally a monastery in the 14th century, this 19th century palace was once a retreat for royalty. On-site you can also discover your culinary skills with a chocolate, cookie or sushi workshop, and escape on the beautiful championship golf courses – designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones II and ranked in the top 100 courses in Continental Europe. Penha Longa Spa offers a wealth of treatments with products by Natura Bissé, nine treatment rooms and a garden with gazebos, a Jacuzzi and a private pool. Treatments on offer include Diamond Multisensorial facials, a Thermal Mud Detox, and a Penha Longa Signature massage using the Penha Longa Signature Oil. There’s also a game room as well as a Kids’ Club, offering picnics, camping, painting, movies and cooking classes to keep younger guests entertained.

Dining information

With seven restaurants, a lounge bar and a poolside eatery, there’s plenty of choice for dining, no matter your mood or appetite. Tuck into a continental buffet breakfast at Penha Longa Mercatto, and return here at dinner time for fresh Italian cuisine. Aqua restaurant (open seasonally) makes snacking easy and the B Lounge Bar provides tempting signature cocktails and afternoon tea. Sample Portuguese tapas at Arola, head to Spices for Asian cuisine or treat yourself to a special dinner at LAB for Michelin Star cuisine with a wine list inspired by the finest flavours from around the world. Midori is the hotel’s second restaurant to earn a Michelin star. Products from all over Portugal are used to craft dishes that are Japanese in both their artful presentation and subtle, layered flavours.

The hotel also manages two other restaurants located off-site. If you find yourself in central Lisbon, try Eneko Lisboa which holds a Michelin star and serves traditional Basque cuisine. For something more relaxed, Basque restaurant shares the same location and continues the traditional focus, with informal dishes made for sharing in a tavern-style setting.
