Croatia holidays

See thousands of beautiful sights in Croatia. Stay in seaside cities surrounded by ancient walls and traipse through hilltop towns spilling over with vineyards. Make the most of the 1,000-mile-long coastline by spending beach days dipping in and out of the intensely blue Adriatic. To see even more seascapes, cross waves on a catamaran between some of the country’s 1,000-plus islands.

Magical cities and a mega coast

Seen the cities? You’ve only just cracked Croatia’s surface. Spend time on a glamorous island like Hvar on the Dalmatian Coast or head to a charming town in Istria for truffles and wine.

In Dubrovnik dramatic views of cliffs bracing the sea and Byzantine towers peering over red-roofed buildings look like something straight out of a fantasy. Split is equally enchanting with its Roman ruins and promenade. Then there’s Zagreb, where you’re never far from a museum or outdoor terrace – experience spica, the Saturday morning ritual of drinking coffee in the city centre, on your trip.

City breaks, beach holidays and adventure trips can all be planned in Croatia, book flights to Croatia and discover terracotta seaside towns, with their story-telling architecture and tales of historic empires.

Carefully selected Croatia hotels

Our recommended holidays in Croatia

Holiday on Croatia's coast and visit the ancient, UNESCO-listed cities of Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir. On the Croatian islands, visit the Venetian-era port towns of Korula, Hvar and Rab, on islands of the same name. In Croatia's capital, Zagreb, visit the medieval hillside Gornji Grad (Upper Town) with its winding cobbled streets.

Choose a stay with dramatic scenery and opulent accommodation, at the Hotel Croatia Cavtat. Sitting pretty along the coast on its own peninsula, this lavish hotel will take your breath away, for more reasons than just the view.

Savour a chic four-star retreat when you book a spot at Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik. Situated beside the tranquillity of Lapad Bay, this stylish hotel is close to the wonders of Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

The Bellevue Dubrovnik offers a clifftop sanctuary. With its serene spa, sparkling ocean views and sensational sunsets, this place offers an enchanting break away.

Croatia holiday FAQs

  • Vodice and Sibenik
Don’t miss Vodice’s old town with its cobbled streets and cafes or just prop yourself up at the marina with a gelato. For history and views, take the short hike to Rakitnica Fortress Ruins. Just a quick ferry away is the car-free island of Prvic, all stone houses and a gentle vibe. It’s also perfect for a quiet swim.
Nearby Sibenik gives a more Game of Thrones vibe and it’s where you’ll find the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of St James, built entirely from stone with no mortar, as well as maze-like lanes and tucked-away squares.
About 20 minutes inland from Sibenik and around a 90-minute drive from Split, Krka National Park delivers waterfalls, emerald plunge pools and views that make you feel miles from anywhere.
  • Trogir and Split
You could be in a living museum in Trogir, with its tiny lanes, balconies and Venetian flair packed on to a little island. Watch boats drift by, then tuck into freshly plucked seafood.
Just 30 minutes down the coast, Split has a totally different vibe. Cafes now fill what was once an emperor’s retirement home: Diocletian’s Palace. Enjoy open-air bars tucked into ancient walls, listen to street musicians in Peristyle Square or join a game of picigin at Bacvice.
  • Podstrana
Just five miles south of Split, Podstrana is a small seaside town with a relaxed resort-style feel. Think quiet beaches, paddleboarding and sea-view villas. It’s ideal for families or travellers wanting the coast without the crowds.
Swim at Grljevac Beach, paddleboard along the riviera or hike to St George’s Church. Finish with beachside cocktails and locals grilling fresh fish – many here still make their own olive oil making it all charm and no chaos.
  • Makarska Riviera
Imagine a beach break on a Bond film set and you have the Makarska Riviera. Brela offers pine-scented luxury, Baska Voda brings cosy family charm while Tucepi gives you peace and quiet. Makarska is more about buzz, cocktails, cliffs and a busy promenade.
Hike the pine-lined paths to the Biokovo Skywalk, a glass-bottomed platform with a 1,200 m drop. Not for the faint-hearted. Feeling brave? Try Nugal Beach where clothing is often optional and confidence is key.
  • Hvar Island
Jet-set glam meets old-world charm in Hvar. Head to Hvar Town for a lively vibe or wander the cobbled streets of Stari Grad, one of Europe’s oldest towns, founded by the Greeks in 384 BC.
Explore this UNESCO-listed gem, relax in sleepy cafes or head just outside town to lavender fields and vineyards. Set sail to the Pakleni Islands and yes, lavender ice cream is a must.
  • Brac Island
Brac brings beauty without the buzz. Zlatni Rat is one of Croatia’s geographical marvels. This spit of smooth white pebbles changes shape due to sea and weather conditions and is hugged by glass-clear water. It’s also the ultimate Adriatic playground if you fancy watching the expert wind and kitesurfers who come here. Then head to Pucisca where old-school charm still rules. There’s a stone-carving school, not many people and a very sweet, slow island vibe.
  1. Walk Dubrovnik’s city walls to see the city’s tangle of old town lanes and the Adriatic Sea. Pass a range of scenes from little courtyards where hanging laundry shimmies in the coastal breeze to Baroque buildings that’ll make you feel like you’ve just stepped into an epic fantasy. Game of Thrones fans will recognise sights from the show – this is King’s Landing. Go early to avoid crowds.
  2. Make a beeline for one of Croatia’s more than 1,000 beaches. Brac’s Zlatni Rat beach, also known as the Golden Horn, is an A-lister on Croatia’s coast with clear water and pine-fringed paths. If you’re looking for a quieter scene, try nearby Murvica beach. Hvar’s got trendy beach clubs and secluded coves, while city breakers might opt for Banje in Dubrovnik or Bacvice in Split.
  3. Visit one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheatres. The Pula Arena has witnessed gladiator battles, medieval knight tournaments and modern-day rockers like Sting enrapture audiences of thousands. The oval amphitheatre stands near the city’s seafront and is one of the best things to see in Istria.
  4. Order a cappuccino inside a Roman emperor’s retirement palace. In Split, Diocletian’s Palace takes over much of the old town, its thick-walled complex home to cafes, shops, bars and even an Egyptian sphynx. When the sun is strong, enter the cool basement to browse craft stalls for locally made souvenirs. This is the same basement where Daenerys kept her dragons chained in Game of Thrones.
  5. Follow the wooden boardwalks in Plitvice Lakes National Park to huge lakes cascading into one another and waterfalls tumbling down forested slopes. This UNESCO-listed site is the biggest national park in the country, with 16 large lakes and many more little ones reflecting meadowy, mountainous surroundings.

Visit the Dalmatia region on Croatia's south coast, home to medieval port towns backed by rugged mountains. Explore Croatia's scattered Dalmatian Islands on a beach holiday and stay at Le Meridien Lav in Split. North along the coast, Kvarner boasts Croatia's oldest purpose-built holiday resort, Opatija.

Citizens of the UK and Ireland and EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit Croatia. If you hold a passport from a country or territory outside of these areas, you may need to apply for a visa before you travel. You can find out more about visa requirements for all the countries we fly to at the IATA Travel Centre.
