A huge and impressive, beautiful lake in the foothills of the Alps. See the villages of Como, Menaggio, Bellagio & Varenna. The gothic cathedral is one of the main highlights, located near the deepest lake in Europe. It is a popular retreat for wealthy and aristocratic people and a large amount of famous people own homes there, making it a good area for celebrity spotting. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe and is Italy’s third largest.

Florence – 1-2 days.

Take a trip to Florence, stopping off in Parma, Modena or Bologna, before heading south to Florence. Visit any of these Italian cities to stop off in and pick up some local cuisines, such as Parma ham. Modena is the home of Luciano Pavarotti and Enzo Ferrari, as well as cuisine including tortellini and Parmesan cheese, or pop in to Bologna and explore the oldest university in the world. Then visit Florence, the cultural, artistic and architectural gem of Italy.

Or take a break in Padua on route and enjoy a river walk or explore the biggest square in Europe.

Drive to Verona, most famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This Roman city is seen as a more relaxing and pleasant place to visit, with less tourists than nearby Venice. It has remnants of its Roman past, most notably the Arena amphitheatre. On route, stop off in Medieval Bergamo and enjoy the artistic treasures, or visit Brescia, in the foothills of the Alps. There is also a selection of museums and it is close to the Lakes.

This medium-sized town has a beautiful pedestrian-only centre with a local museum housing the medieval crown of the Langobard kings and a marvellous park, Parco di Monza. This is the largest enclosed park in Europe and inside the park is the Autodromo Nazionale, where the Formula 1 grand prix of Italy takes place.

Bergamo – half day.

Bergamo – half day

Visit the elegant, walled hilltop Renaissance university town of Bergamo, perfect for a half day away from Milan. This pretty town displays a mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture and you can admire the viewsover it by taking the 30-second Campanone lift. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its rich historical and artistic heritage, is the most important building in the city.

Lake Garda – 1 day.

Lake Garda – 1 day

This beautiful lake is the largest in Italy, with a lot of beautiful small cities around, one of the best being Sirmione with its Roman ruins. There are two big theme parks nearby: Gardaland, the best in Italy, and Canevaworld Resort, home of Movieland, as well as a water park. Take the cable car up Mount Baldo for stunning views and grab a bite from the small restaurant there. Hire a paddle boat and enjoy the sunshine.
