Information Technology

Setting the pace at the heart of our business, to enable us to succeed in the connected world.

You would have to search long and hard to find a part of British Airways that doesn't rely on IT.  From ba.com, to the use of iPads on board, to systems that optimise the use of fuel, to the exploitation of latest mobile technology, there are many ways that we create and deliver competitive advantage for British Airways and our global alliance partners.

Without IT, the airline would not operate, whether it's tracking a bag or ordering a spare part for an aircraft on the other side of the world. This simple fact places BA's IT department right at the centre of our business, which is where we like to work. It also means the IT professionals who work here have the potential to exert an enormous influence on the airline's performance.

At British Airways, the IT department is responsible for creating the airline's IT strategy and delivering the supporting IT products and services. Our objectives are to deliver a secure, robust and reliable worldwide IT operation 24x7 at a reducing cost, to deliver IT projects to time, budget and specification, with year-on-year productivity improvements, and to simplify BA's processes by delivering efficient IT solutions hand-in-hand with business changes.

IT Graduate Programme

As a graduate you will have the opportunity to be part of the most exciting period in British Airways’ history, including preparing for the arrival of our Boeing 787s and Airbus A380s into our fleet of over 260 aircraft.

Technology touches every part of the airline and therefore being part of the IT department offers the opportunity to work in a broad range of positions, and thereby help shape the future of the airline.

Our apprentice programmes last 24 months and have been developed with one thing in mind: you. You will receive formal IT technical training supplemented with developing your business knowledge to provide you with a stepping-stone into IT. Aside from the friendly and experienced people you will work with, you will be coached by mentors. British Airways is working in partnership with colleges and training providers to deliver a professional qualification that you will work towards achieving.

IT Software Engineering - Higher Apprentice Programme

An exciting and challenging opportunity to join the IT Delivery and Architecture teams. The role will develop your understanding of programming, system testing, analysis and design and you will help deliver real IT projects that will benefit the airline.

IT Operations - Advanced Apprentice Programme (24 x 7 shifts)

As an IT Operations Apprentice you will contribute to supporting the delivery of IT services to the airline as part of a shift team on a 24x7 basis. Essential requirement: The ability to work a full 24x7 shift pattern, including early, late, night shifts as well as weekends.

Locations

The vast majority of IT roles are based in our two centres of IT excellence at Heathrow and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Training and development - tailored to individual needs

We want to develop our people to be outstanding through a programme of target learning and training, which the IT department has always taken seriously.

We’ve proudly launched our new Skills Strategy recently.  This has introduced what we like to call a ‘skills passport’ for structured personal development. We are also piloting a mentoring programme, which we hope will become a key learning and developmental tool, as part of our blended approach to learning.

The support and guidance we offer means we have skill champions and subject matter experts in place, supplemented by creative solutions and cutting edge skills development and learning initiatives.

The skills development process combines on the job training, coaching and mentoring and classroom training, with the emphasis on the practical.
