Jonty, Finance Manager – Alliances and Network

Since joining BA, I’m now in my fifth role – which just goes to show there are plenty of options to experience different areas of the airline. Finance doesn’t get more varied than this. As one of two Finance Managers supporting the Strategy and Business Units team, my role covers BA’s alliance and network portfolio. This means I collaborate with other airlines to develop new partnerships and support the network planning team (who decide where we fly) from a financial perspective.

Over at our head offices at Waterside I worked closely with many of BA’s senior managers, which was a great opportunity to support and educate senior colleagues in all things finance. Later I stepped up to cover my boss’s maternity, which provided a unique chance to prove myself.

It was really satisfying demystifying finance for non-finance colleagues and seeing them make better commercial decisions as a result. After that I was promoted and as part of the commercial team I worked closely with sales, marketing revenue management and alliance. And yes, the opportunity to travel was there, with several trips to Singapore and Sydney. Possibly the best bit was being able to fly in a business class seat for the first time in my life.

Having started at BA as part-qualified, the company’s professional study support scheme was fantastic – it helped me get those all important ACMA letters after my name. Last year I completed my CIMA qualification and having to face no more exams is certainly worth celebrating. 

Patrice, Finance Manager – Brands and Marketing

I started my career by completing a Business Management degree specialising in Accounting and HR at Royal Holloway University. After taking a well needed gap year travelling around the world I joined PwC and completed my ACA training there whilst I worked within the auditing function. Upon qualification I knew that I wanted to use my knowledge from University and Chartered Accountancy to really contribute to driving changes in a business. I also knew that I needed to join a company that I could be passionate about and could see myself growing and developing in. When a role at BA came up, there really wasn’t any contest – my love for travel and the opportunity to work for one of the few remaining British brands saw me happily leave practice and move into a very different world!

PatriceGordon

I started as a finance analyst in Group Reporting, specifically responsible for uploading and analysing all of BA’s revenue on a monthly basis. As I developed in this role and my immediate manager moved on I went on to lead the team and stepped up into the Group Consolidation manager role for six months before moving to my current role. Working in Group Reporting gave me the opportunity to build networks across the business and enabled me to make an informed decision about the business unit that I wanted to move into. It was a difficult choice but knowing that there will be a number of opportunities in the future, I felt the role to go for was in Brands and Marketing and I am pleased to say that I enjoy the challenges that this role brings on a daily basis.

My role involves looking after key areas which supports the Customer proposition. The Loyalty team which looks after our BA Executive Club Proposition, Digital – which drives our online presence in sites such as Facebook & Twitter, Research & Insight and the Brand Communication/Strategy team. Alongside project work, some of which cross over a number of areas in Marketing and other areas of the business – the most notable example is being the accountable finance manager for our sponsorship contract for the 2012 Olympics.

Laura, Finance Analyst – IT Delivery

My role includes budgeting and forecasting operational and capital costs as well as IT project appraisals.

I get the opportunity to work on business cases that cover a variety of departments within BA, such as, Property, Engineering, Operations and Cargo, ensuring that they make financial sense and are in the best interest of BA. It is very interesting to see how IT Delivery interlinks with so many different areas of the business and what a key role IT plays in keeping our planes flying.

Prior to working for BA, I was a Management Accountant for Hays Recruitment Agency, which involved looking after the accounts for the Construction & Property department. During this time I completed my CIMA qualification and was lucky enough to join BA and work with an exciting and friendly team.

LauraHewitt

The role encourages me to work with senior managers and support high profile business cases. It is a very challenging yet rewarding role with new, interesting, projects being discussed on a weekly basis (so my job never gets boring!)

This is my first role within BA, but I will shortly be moving over to a Finance Analyst role within Cargo. Having only been at BA for 14 months, this goes to show that there are lots of opportunities to gain experience in different areas of the airline.

My new role will give me the opportunity to work for one of the top ten leading cargo airlines and develop my skills in project management. The role will be very diverse and opens up opportunities to work with, and gain experience in Fleet and Networks as well as working on synergies between BA and Iberia.

I look forward to continuing my career with BA and hopefully gaining a variety of experience along the way!
